Here’s a recipe I recently found and even tested to use as a sport beverage instead of water. Actually, water isn’t the best choice when exercising hard. It’s important to have carbohydrate and honey provides more vitamins and minerals than sugar or corn based sweeteners.
To make:
1/2 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon Morton Lite Salt
1 pack unsweetened Kool-Aid or Crystal Light
7 1/2 cups water
What do you use as a sport drink??

oh i love this. i really have a problem with most sports drinks and this would be something i would drink. did you ever watch the movie?
Mark, what was the verdict on this drink? Is it something you regularly use?
I’ve used it twice now, once on a hundred emiler and then on a three hour Sunday group ride. The taste is probably the best thing about this drink, you get the sweetness and flavor of honey which is superior to maltodextrin or regular sugar yet it still has some room for dilution.
I could add another 1/2 cup more water to mixture which helps to stretch it out. Anymore and you might lose the honey flavor.
The key to any sport drink is to make it hypotonic which is to say the sugar solution is no more than 5% so as to not affect gastric emptying or osmosis. (Sugary drinks above 5% spend too much time in the stomach being digested and the water doesn’t get past the stomach lining to hydrate your body.)
100 calories per 16 oz is close to 5%. I think this mixture is about 125 calories per 16oz so really I might go with another 1/2 cup of water.
I don’t like commercial sports drinks so I’ve been using a loosely translated version of something I read in Thrive.. I take 10 oz of plain coconut water ( I use the O.N.E brand)
add 1 tsp of spirulina, the juice of 1/2 a lemon and just a teeny squirt of honey and it has worked tremendously for me. I used it in both my Half Marathons and loved it!
Thanks for the tip!
